When you turn on the news every night, there is a good chance you will see a story about immigration in this country. While the focus for most of this year has been around the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” policy towards immigrants who come into this country searching for a better life, the DACA program has taken a back seat.
This has left the more than 800,000 Dreamers in a horrifying game of legal limbo, unsure of what will happen to them next. If you or a loved one is DACA recipient and you want to find some clarity for the future, you may need a DACA attorney in Salt Lake City. At Familia America, our experienced attorneys are standing by and ready to help you.
When the rules for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) came out in 2012, we learned that it protected those who had arrived in the country before the age of 16. What the program allowed for was those who were brought here as children who had been living in the shadows because they feared deportation to come out of hiding and join the economy. They had a chance to attend school, get jobs, and have hope.
In late 2017, their dreams were shattered when President Trump rescinded the DACA program and demanded Congress find a permanent solution for the Dreamers.
Yet we still do not have that solution, even though there is wide support for granting DACA recipients the ability to stay from both side of the political spectrum.
Because for every attempt at granting DACA recipients a reprieve has come in the scope of a larger immigration bill that strengthens border security and changes immigration laws altogether. Now, as we move into late 2018, the Dreamers are still wondering what comes next for them.
The Dreamers have grown up in this country. They have integrated into American society and have little to no recollection of their home country. Yet they face possible deportation to those countries, places where drug and gang violence could threaten their lives on a daily basis.
Those who came here as children are citizens in every way except on a piece of paper. They contribute to society through taxes and provide valuable services. Some are doctors, some are researchers. Many are serving in the US military.
For them to be deported would be the worst possible scenario, though without a permanent solution, that could be what happens.
