Obtaining a green card can be a complex process, as you are sure to know if you have been attempting to navigate it. With the expert assistance of a Salt Lake City green card attorney, much of the stress can be removed from this rather emotive application, and preparing well for each stage is one of the main pieces of advice you can expect to be given. One of the grounds on which you can apply for a green card is being married to an American citizen and, if this is the route you are taking in your quest for residency, you should be aware that an interview will form an important part of the application process.

To help maximize your chances of interviewing successfully, and to remove some of the associated anxiety, our Salt Lake City green card attorney shares some top tips on how to prepare for that all-important interview.

Check the Green Card Interview Paperwork You Received

When you first receive the letter inviting you to your green card interview, you should be sure to check that the details are all correct. The letter is quite long and contains a lot of important information, so you should take your time to review it and ensure you have taken in all relevant parts. The details you should not from this letter include:

  • Your name – is it correct?
  • Date, time and location of the interview

You will need to take this letter to your interview so, once you have checked all the details and familiarized yourself with the contents, store it in a safe place.

What to Do on the Day of Your Green Card Interview

Unless it is absolutely unavoidable, you must attend your green card interview. If you do not attend, it is less likely that your green card will be granted, as you will be unable to answer any questions and concerns the officials may have.  Some of the tips our Salt Lake City green card attorney has shared about interview day include:

  • Arrive at least 30 minutes before your interview time
  • Wait for your Salt Lake City green card attorney to arrive, then place your notice in the relevant slot on the wall. If you do this before your attorney arrives, you may be called in before they get there

Before you leave home on the day of your interview, make sure you have each of the following with you:

  • Identification documents: This should include some form of government ID, for example, your work permit
  • The original documents you submitted with your green card application, plus a full set of copies
  • Up-to-date proof of your financial situation, including at least two or three months’ bank statements, utility bills, mortgage or rent agreement, and similar. These should have both your name and your spouse’s name printed on them
  • Up-to-date I864 documents and W2s
  • Your spouse should take their birth certificate, passport, and state ID
  • Original proof of your legal entry into the United States
  • Original, certified, marriage license
  • Original divorce decree, if applicable
