Most Migrants Show Up For Hearings In Utah

Sep 17, 2019 Familia America Deportation Removal Defense

There is no denying that the news has been filled with immigration issues over the last few years. It is unavoidable. However, sometimes we just need to strip back the politics and get to the bottom of what the reality is on the ground. At Familia America, our team closely monitors immigration issues. We understand these cases. Today, our Salt Lake City deportation attorney wants to talk about whether or not it is true that migrants do not show up for their hearings. This is an important issue in our community, and we are happy to shed some light on the matter.

What is going on with deportation hearings?

The administration recently issued a new rule that would allow indefinite detention of immigrant families, a dramatic change in long-standing policy for the US government. If it seems like we have been dealing with this issue a lot over the last few years, it is because we have. The Executive Branch and the courts have been battling over this issue since January 20, 2017.

The argument for the new change is that new arrival who are released never show up for their court hearings. However, the data shows us a different story here in Utah and at other areas around the country.

In the cases opened in Utah since 2016, 83.5 percent of immigrants who were once detained and then released have shown up for all of their immigration court hearings. Those who were never detained at all appeared at 86.2 percent of their hearings. This data was gathered by the Salt Lake Tribune from information taken from the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) at Syracuse University

“The vast, vast, majority here are showing up,” says one local immigration attorney.

What can you do?

Families who are dealing with immigration hearing often struggle to navigate the complex waters surrounding our legal system. That is in large part due to the changes that seem to be coming down the pipelines on a regular basis.
