Mayor John Curtis has recently removed two campaign ads from Facebook where he encourages followers to build the wall and stop sanctuary cities. While it’s natural to build walls and shut people out, this may not be the best approach to immigration. These are controversial topics considered hostile and it is not the time to post topics that divide us but rather unite us.

The Republican mayor has been criticized for not been very conservative. Yet these ads seem to support far-right views on immigration, particularly those used during the presidential campaign. Curtis didn’t support the campaign because he didn’t agree with such opinions yet he was advertising them on Facebook. He had proposed securing the border and encouraged stricter enforcement of immigration laws. According to him, building a wall is a great way to protect our country and he will support it wholeheartedly.

Curtis also wanted to penalize undocumented immigrants who come to U.S. and commit several crimes or serious offenses. He believes it will encourage loyalty and productivity and it’s also a way to get right with the law. Also, he had also condemned sanctuary cities. These are the cities that don’t cooperate with enforcing some immigration policies.

We are a nation of immigrants

Everyday immigrants come to the United States in search of a better life. They risk everything to get here. Some of them are trying to escape war or to survive while others just want to work and support their families. Nobody should be denied this opportunity, notwithstanding their national origin. But immigration reforms have a long way to go. We have a history of mistreating those who don’t act or look like us. What’s the difference between people that came recently and those who have been living here for ages? At the end of the road, only Native Americans can claim this land and they haven’t been that unwelcoming.

The land of the free and the home of the brave

Are we still the land of the free? This is a question many of us keep asking ourselves. The question is simple but the answer seems to be complicated. The good thing is there are still brave people out there fighting for the rights and freedoms of immigrants. It’s tough being kicked out of your native country only to be unwelcomed in another for no reason other than your beliefs.

We protect and defend immigrants

Undocumented immigrants have rights under the United States Constitution. These are basic human rights that should not be denied to anyone. If you are an undocumented immigrant, contact a Salt Lake City deportation attorney to protect your rights. You have the right to defend yourself and your family against deportation, and the right to representation by an immigration attorney. There is always going to be a John Curtis or any other politician pushing politics to the right. But if you think about it, it’s not even about politics but rather protecting human rights. This is exactly what we do here at Familia America.
