It is a scary time to be an immigrant in this country. The current leaders of our country have made it very clear that they do not want immigrants coming into this country. More specifically, they do not want immigrants from Mexico, Central America, or South America. A new research study from Washington University in St Louis shows that the average “white American” believes in negative stereotypes based on what people look like. To clarify, white Americans believe that people who look Mexican or Middle Eastern are more than likely illegal and must, therefore, be using American resources illegally. The study stated that 60% of white Americans who looked at pictures of Mexican men believed that they had less than high school education, had false papers, didn’t know English, and was of low status. There is a firm belief that anyone who does not look white American must be illegal until proven that they are not.
About 16.7% of United States population is Hispanic or Latino. Not every one person who is brown skin is Hispanic or Latino. In fact, those of that origin come in a range of color. So how sad is it that of that population that happens to have darker skin, the majority of Americans believe that they are illegal? Unfortunately, if you fit this description then you are being judged and scrutinized. This can affect who hires you, what kind of support you get, and your overall feeling of included, which definitely affects your mental health. Don’t let these statistics frighten.
