Utah’s Deportation Story

Every once and awhile you hear of a story so heartbreaking that you need a few minutes to yourself after you read it. Well, get ready for that pause.

Mother of 4 and Guatemalan immigrant, Maria Santiago Garcia, 41, was an upright citizen in her community. She managed the local McDonalds. She came from poverty and did her best to rise to a better future by taking an opportunity in a new country. She would have stayed in Guatemala, but her town was overrun by gangs and violent groups. At age 27 she witnessed a woman being hacked to death with a machete in her village. Because she chose to speak to the police about what happened, gangs had a hit on her. So, she fled to Texas in order to seek asylum from the violence and in order to save her own life.

While in Texas her boyfriend helped her get a lawyer. Between then and now, she was married twice and had four children. She was convicted of using someone else’s social security number for work, but under Obama’s administration, her deportation was unlikely because her crime was not threatening to the public or her family. Unfortunately, times changed and her conviction would prove deportation worthy.
