Citizenship And Immigration Delays Are Discouraging

Feb 16, 2019 Familia America Green Card

We now have new research that shows US Citizenship and Immigration Services are moving at increasingly slower speeds. Jason Boyd of the American Immigration Lawyers Association says that the average time for them to process a case has “increased by 46% the past two fiscal years.”

He attributes the delays to policies put in place during the first two years of the Trump administration. For example, in 2017 USCIS changed the requirement for employment-based green card applications, mandating new in-person interviews. He says that this has “undermined the ability of US companies to hire and retain essential workers and fill critical workforce gaps.”

At Familia America, we understand that the immigration debate can affect people at all levels and we want to help. When you need a Salt Lake City green card attorney, you can count on us to be by your side.

The Problems Just Get Worse

From the beginning of the current administration, we have seen the issues of immigration take center stage. The partial government shutdown was just the latest in a string of things the administration has done to make immigration more difficult. In 2017, shortly after the President took office, the “Buy American and Hire American” executive order was issued. This significantly changed the H-1B, or work visa requirement.

We also know that the process for permanent residency takes an incredible amount of time to complete. Those delays are one of the reasons that there are many undocumented immigrants in the country to begin with. Green cards are important because they allow a person to legally live and work in the United States on a permanent basis.

It takes away the need to come into the country illegally or overstay a visa. When a person gets their green card, it is like a weight is lifted off of their shoulders. Not only are people able to stop constantly worrying about deportation, but they can more easily get a job because prospective employers know they are here for good.

Green cards also help people more easily move their families here. Permanent residency status also allows a person to become eligible for federal benefits, including Social Security. In a time when there is a growing elderly population in the US who depend on younger workers, this should be something the country encourages.
