Becoming a U.S. Citizen

These days, the topic of immigration — specifically illegally immigrants — is a hot one. Although the United States was built by illegal immigrants, there are rules to becoming a citizen of the United States. Immigration attorneys run into hundreds — thousands — of cases every year pertaining to illegal immigrants who want to stay in this country. Most eventually go through the proper channels, while a few stay hidden below the radar. But if you truly want to become a citizen of the United States, there are a few ways to do so.

First, you can become a permanent resident. In order to do this, you must obtain a green card . Once you have had your green card for at least five years you may apply for citizenship upon meeting a few other criteria including:

  • Being at least 18 years of age
  • Have lived in the United States for at least three months
  • Must have been a continuous resident of the United States
  • You must have been physically in the country for at least 30 months out of the five years
  • Once you apply for naturalization, you must live in the United States until you are naturalized

It is also strongly encouraged that you learn the language and do not run into any issues with the law.

Another avenue to becoming a citizen is to marry someone who is already a citizen, or at the very least a legal resident of the country.

You also have the option to join the military in order to receive your citizenship. For many, it is not ideal, but it is a way to obtain that status while at the same time contributing to the country.

When it comes to obtaining citizenship in the United States it could be a daunting years-long process. That is because of the number of requests to enter this country every year.
